TRIPLE CROWN INTERNATIONAL 2006 WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Six Commonwealth nations, The Bahamas, South Africa, Zambia, India, Jamaica, and Malta, became this year’s proud winners of the seven most prestigious and prized beauty queen titles of the world, at the 2nd annual Commonwealth Triple Crown Contest in London, in July.

Forty-Seven Commonwealth nations competed, on 16th July, at the London Hammersmith Palais, for the Union’s seven principal and prized culture and charity beauty queen titles for the world-wide promotion of Quality of Life improvement.

The Bahamas scooped the two titles of Miss Commonwealth International 2006, won by Francesca Plakaris, and Miss Teen Commonwealth International 2006, won by Rashana Thompson.

The titles were first won in 2004 by Alafair Celestine of Trindad and Tobago and Kayleigh Hamblion of England, respectively.

Ghana, represented by Deandra Bentil-Willieson, and India, represented by Nidhima Kohli came second and third, respectively, in the Miss Commonwealth Pageant.  In the Miss Teen Pageant, Malta, represented by Alison Galea Valletta, and Nigeria, represented by Sewa Faleye came second and third, respectively.

South Africa’s stunning blonde, Mariette Chippindall, took home to Pretoria the title of Mrs. Commonwealth International 2006, after fighting off strong competition from hot contenders from other countries including England, Kenya, Malta, New Zealand, and Zambia.  The title, which attracts wide participation from the Commonwealth, was previously won in 2004 by Yorkshire’s athletic Mrs. Zoe Celenzu, who has since been raising money for cancer charities around the world and for her local hospices.

New Zealand, represented by Marie-Therese Caraher-Gilbert (who previously participated in the Mrs World 2006 Contest), and Malta, represented by Brenda Grech were the first and second runners-up, respectively, in the Mrs Commonwealth Pageant..

Mariette, 42 and a married mother, entered the contest, with the confidence to win it. On her visit, last November, to the Great Ormond Street Hospital’s Children’s Charity in London, she confidently told admirers “I shall return to London in July to win the title of Mrs Commonwealth International”.

The married mothers’ pageant for the age group 30 to 59 has been specially designed to encourage participation from the senior segment of the community, in the promotion of  the community aims of the Triple Crown Pageant.

The Triple Crown Contest included four additional titles for the respective four cultural African, Asia-Pacific, Caribbean and Euro-Atlantic sectors of the Commonwealth.

Zambia’s beautiful Emma Chishimba, a university graduate with a masters degree in Science, became the new Commonwealth Africa’s queen when she won the title of Miss Commonwealth Africa 2006. The African title was first won in 2004 by Kenya’s Jeniffer Kimuge who has since helped to set up a school in Kenya for orphaned children.

India’s contestant, Nidhima Kohli, entered the contest with the title of Miss Commonwealth India Sport. She fought off strong competition from contenders representing Commonwealth Asia-Pacific nations, including Bangladesh, Malaysia, Pakistan and Singapore, to win the title of Miss Commonwealth Asia-Pacific 2006. The Asia-Pacific title was previously held from 2004 by India’s Kiron Salhotra.

Jamaica’s Simone Fairweather, Legal Secretary, entered the contest as Miss Commonwealth Jamaica Culture and won the title crown of Miss Commonwealth Caribbean 2006 for that sector. Her predecessor from 2004 was Gail Campbell of Trinidad and Tobago.

England’s attractive Naomi Jane Donald, a University student from Surrey, fought a hard battle to win the title of Miss Commonwealth Euro-Atlantic 2006. The Euro-Atlantic sector was represented by a host of finalists representing Canada, Cyprus, England, Malta, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The previous holder of the title from 2004 is Gemma Kelly Rose, the reigning Miss Commonwealth Wales.

The Euro-Atlantic sector has massively contributed to the promotion of the community aims and objectives of the Triple Crown Pageant. Among the major contributors is the internationally renown culture and charity queen, Amanda Jane Taylor, who has retained her title for two consecutive years as Miss Commonwealth Scotland.

Miss Taylor is this year’s winner of the title of Miss Commonwealth Charity International, the special reserve title for the recognition of commendable contribution to charity, internationally. Miss Taylor’s tireless work for charity recently earned her the title of Ambassador for Aberdeen City and Shires vested upon her by the Lord Provost of Aberdeen City and the Lord Provost of Aberdeen Shires.

The Triple Crown Pageant is referred to as “a charitable community initiative powered by Inner Beauty”.

Its purpose is described in our marketing literature as being for “the selection and crowning of Commonwealth culture and charity queens as ambassadors and vehicles for the increased promotion of  the eradication of poverty, commonwealth unity, cultural awareness, family values, good parenthood, international volunteering, ladies’ sports,  community charitableness, and fund-raising for charitable organisations and humanitarian and environmental projects across the Commonwealth and the wider international community”.

Indeed, the pioneer culture and charity queens have, by their performance over the last 18 months, proven their worth, as role models, having sacrificed precious time to help raise over £3Million for charity, among their numerous other contributions to the welfare of the international community.

The pioneers have thus set a challenge for the newly crowned queens, who, with guidance from the pageant, look certain to live up to expectations by achieving their avowed plans to use their titles for community Quality of Life improvement, during their year of reign.

The promoters are thankful to all the contestants and their sponsors and to all other contributors to the successful contest. These include the panel of  9 judges composed of celebrities and industry professionals, and the show hosts, including the celebrity main host, television and radio presenter, Geoff Schumann.

“Most of the contestants did not have the benefit of a sponsor, but they were as undeterred as we were by limited resources, as they went ahead with our plans for this second staging of the world’s most prestigious contest,” said our spokeswoman to the show audience.

“With the brilliant results from this contest, we are now more confident than ever before of attracting worthwhile sponsorship for the Triple Crown 2007, planned for October next year,” she added.

The Triple Crown International Pageant prides itself on its uniqueness and its prestigious trade mark, Miss Commonwealth. As the only pageant capable of crowning 7 internationally recognised queens in each year’s contest, it is second to none. These qualities and the purpose and calibre of its culture and charity queens make it the world’s most prestigious pageant. It is no wonder that its queens, at every level, municipal, regional, national and international, wear and productively use their prized titles to deliver real community benefits, with the greatest pride.

This year, alongside the Triple Crown Contest was the newly formed contest for the title of “Queen of the Friends of the Commonwealth”. This pageant was set up in response to popular request from non-Commonwealth countries for affiliation with the Commonwealth Triple Crown. It has the special community aim of promoting increased international volunteering and friendship.

The finalists in the contest for this crown included contenders from Angola, Bulgaria, Croatia, DR Congo, Ivory Coast, Lithuania, Morocco, Somalia, Slovakia, and Sweden, etc Miss Martina Bengova, the reigning Slovakian Queen of  Friends of the Commonwealth was the winner of the title of Queen of Friends of the Commonwealth 2006. The runner-up was Raimonda Jankunaite, the reigning Lithuanian Queen of Friends of the Commonwealth.

TESTIMONIALS OF CHARITABLE WORK: This contest has attracted the right kinds of people, namely, the kinds of contestants who, supported by their families and (where available) their sponsors, understand and ardently wish to participate with the Miss Commonwealth Organisation in achieving its cultural and charitable objectives for the benefit of the community. The Organisation had planned to honour, at the contest, many examples of individuals in the Commonwealth who have made commendable contributions to charity and cultural awareness promotion. This was to include nominees from Liverpool who have contributed to the Quality of Life in the City. Unfortunately, the mechanism for the publicity of this proposal could not be put in place in time by those to whom the responsibility was delegated.

However, the Organisation is proud to announce that finalist contestants Kate Hallam and Sonia Hassanien were to have been presented at the contest to the audience as examples of individuals possessing inner beauty. They were to deliver their personal testimonials of charitable works to the audience in order to stimulate and promote increased community involvement in charitable activities. They will be featured on the programme for the Miss Commonwealth International 2005.

Ghanaian contestants robbed of their chance to participate

Ghana's Miss Commonwealth Planning Committee had worked hard to produce the largest African entourage, consisting of their contestants, their 15-member cultural dance group - GANZEBA,  their sponsors' representatives, their Committee members, and government officials, to the contest. Yet, they were denied the chance to participate in the contest. At the eleventh hour, they were to learn that the British High Commission in Accra would not issue them visas to enter the United Kingdom. The Ghanaian party was very much looking forward to the event and was very much disappointed that it could not take part. The Minister of Culture, who is also the Head of the Committee, is looking into the matter.

Extra-Spectacular Miss Commonwealth International 2005 planned

The Promoters have completed a plan which will see a whole new team of organisers for the 2005 international contest. There will be more information regarding this, in the coming weeks.

New...Coming up...

QUEENS' REPORT                                          Virgin Atlantic

This report will be continually updated to familiarise viewers with the charitable and other activities of our 'culture and charity queens' around the world.

OVER £1Million raised as of 13th May 05.

Queens' responses to the Tsunami and other world charity appeals since December 2004:-

Miss Commonwealth England, Jayne-Louise Slater's charity-fundraising has gone through the roof: So far, she has helped to raise £357,000 for the Tsunami Appeal through organising events and raffles. She has also helped to raise a further £500,000 in conjunction with Whitbread. And she remains infatigable at fundraising. Watch this page!

Miss Teen Commonwealth Asia-Pacific, Kiron Salhotra, has launched her Asian Fundraising Appeal which is influencing many in her local community to donate generously to charity.

OXFAM - Miss Commonwealth Fundraising Scheme: Miss Commonwealth Queens and Pioneer Finalist Contestants have been responding well to the scheme. Under the scheme, the queens and the finalists collect decent and marketable quality clothing items and deliver their collections in Miss Commonwealth-labelled bags to their nearest OXFAM shops for sale to raise money for the Tsunami and other Appeals served by Oxfam around the world. This scheme is now established as a perpetual fundraising initiative and partnership, and its continual promotion will be facilitated by all concerned, the queens being its main drivers. Participating queens will soon be able to give away signed Miss Teen, Miss, and Mrs Commonwealth Triple Crown T-shirts to visitors to Oxfam shops.

Miss Commonwealth Wales, Gemma Kelly Rose, who is also the reigning Miss Commonwealth Euro-Atlantic, has teamed up with her family to participate in the above scheme and they are liaising with the Oxfam shop in Bridge-End, Glamorgan in South Wales. The idea of giving away signed t-shirts originated from their earlier visit to the shop. In June, Gemma is going to parachute out of a flying plane to raise funds for charity. Meanwhile, she has embarked upon raising money for the New Cottage Hospice in Wales.

Miss Commonwealth Scotland, Amanda-Jane Taylor , Barbie model (who works in Dentistry) has been busy raising money for charity. In the last few months to March/April, she has helped to raise over £75,000 for charity, in various charity events including the Soroptimist Charity Fashion Show, the ChildLine Evening of Romance, Oxfam Tsunami Appeal, Northsound Radios Cash for Kids, The Scottish Huntington’s Association.

She did charity work for the launch of her local Cyrenians Christmas Parcel Appeal, a charity for the homeless. She was the sleeping beauty queen in The Cyrenians' BIG SLEEPOUT on 28th January where people volunteered to sleep out all night to experience what it is actually like being homeless. This raised over £25,000 for the homeless. She helped to raise another £11,500 at The Childline Evening of Romance Charity Ball in January. Anthony Nolan Charity is a cancer charity which is heavily concerned with children's leukaemia. She'll take the stage and sing at The Anthony Nolan Emmerdale Extravaganza, amongst many other forthcoming charitable engagements. Amanda is signed up to participate in the 'Race for Life' in Scotland to raise money for Cancer Research. Amanda's interest in charitable work includes getting involved with World Vision in the near future.

Race For Life "Beauty Queen Leads By Example" - Daily Recorder

Over the Christmas, Amanda was promoting community awareness of the inheritable Huntington's Disease (which has affected members of her family) in Scottish papers. Though rare, this disease causes personality changes, involuntary movements, and dementia. Its slow progression means that affected persons may not be aware of it before its symptoms begin to appear. With early detection and good management, affected persons can lead as good a life as possible. As it can be detected by a simple genetic test at any age, this enables early detection which has the benefit of enabling early decisions about whether or not to have children. Amanda's work will help to promote community awareness of these facts about the disease and affected person's early recognition of it.

Mrs Commonwealth International, Zoe Celensu, a charming example of "good motherhood" and a promoter of "family values". She finds the time to visit her local hospice. Among other charitable activities, she also organises special fortnightly Car-boot Sales which raise money for the hospice. She is due shortly to undertake a special programme of charitable activities planned under the Miss Commonwealth Charities Programme.

Miss Teen Commonwealth International, Kayleigh Hamblion, is continuing to raise money for charity as she has been doing every year. She was awarded the title of 'Miss Charity' by Ambassador John Fashanu (the Founder of the John Fashanu Charity Trust - JFCT) at the Miss Commonwealth UK 2004 Contest in London, for raising the highest sum £40,000 for charity, that year.

Miss Teen Commonwealth UK, Leeandra Anderson (in conjunction with her mother, Michelle Tracy) set up the African Concern Network Trust UK, a charity organisation actively involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS, and in the "empowerment of women to take charge of their health" through the Poverty Alleviation Programmes. For the purpose of promoting these objectives, the organisation recently launched the Project Save Africa campaign and it was Leeandra's passion for the campaign that prompted her to enter the contest for Miss Commonwealth UK, in the hope that winning the title would enhance her efforts to open more doors for the resources to support the initiative. According to the organisation, for their mission in African countries, support can be in the forms of "flight tickets, accommodation, and insurance for Leeandra and seven working assistants; anti retroviral drugs, computers, educational materials, condoms, clothing, and shoes, etc (for distribution); other relief materials for the project; and cash/cheque donations to the organisation". For more information regarding the project and making donations to support the campaign, please contact the organisation by telephone (+44(0)7931798343) or email (y2kworld1@mail.com).

Miss Commonwealth International, Alafair Celestine, is delighted by the successful charity-fundraising taking place under her umbrella.
